Celebrate Banned Books Week (9/24-10/1)

During the last week of September every year, hundreds of libraries and bookstores around the country draw attention to the problem of censorship by mounting displays of challenged books and hosting a variety of events. The 2011 celebration of Banned Books Week is held this week, September 24 through October 1. Banned Books Week is the only national celebration of the freedom to read. It was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. More than 11,000 books have been challenged since 1982.

According to the American Library Association, there were 348 challenges reported to the Office of Intellectual Freedom in 2010, and many more go unreported.

Louisville's Food Literacy Project

We wanted to share with you an amazing program we just recently stumbled upon!

The Food Literacy Project at Oxmoor Farm provides farm-based experiential education and entrepreneurial youth development programs that bring the Field-to-Fork experience to life for local youth.

In a time of great concern about the safety of our food sources, rising obesity and diabetes rates, as well as the cultural disconnection between our food and the earth, the Food Literacy Project offers experiential education programs that foster healthier children, healthier communities, and increased respect for the land.

Their plant, agriculture, and food education programs are available to public and private school classes, community groups, youth and after-school programs, and special needs groups. They also offer professional development for educators, focusing on ways to infuse themes of food and nutrition into curriculum.

This project offers a rare opportunity to engage in a sustainable food system, and to share in the pleasures and rewards of farming.

Vision and Mission

The Food Literacy Project envisions a just and sustainable food system in which people foster a deep understanding of what connects us to each other and the natural world.

Their mission

is to inspire a new generation of people to build relationships with healthy food, farming, and the land.

Community Impact

In 2010, over 2,000 local youth got their hands dirty and tried something new at the farm. Because FLP strives to engage the members of the community who are most in need, 87% of those students qualified for free or reduced lunch at school. Many of the youth served have never been to a farm before, and live in neighborhoods identified as “food deserts,” meaning that their families face limited access to fresh produce and overexposure to fast food.

Their programs empower youth to make healthy choices for themselves, and also to become leaders in addressing issues of food security in our community.

Teaching Philosophy

FLP takes a hands-on approach, encouraging youth to get their hands dirty, taste new foods fresh from the field, and get involved in the work of the farm. Their inquiry-based programs emphasize real experience, and participants are encouraged to use all their senses to explore. The farm is a living classroom where students can learn by discovery, cultivating a sense of wonder about where our food comes from.

Pardon our break in updates; We have been CONSUMED in early fall festivities and enjoying the season change! Nonetheless, we are excited to share some of the artists that we have been receiving the past month.

For starters, a warm welcome to Megan Stacy of San Francisco, CA!

Megan's gorgeous designs feature 22k gold plated ear hooks & chains (while a few are antique brass) All of her leather is also repurposed from vintage skirts. How cool is that?

We are also super delighted to welcome the lovely Ali Heiss of Amarilo Designs!

(Diamond Bar, California)

Her jewelry is simple but unique, beautiful but strong, and delicate but sturdy. Amarilo will never sell anything that is less than perfect in its vision, and concentrates on using quality materials such as argentium sterling silver, AAA gemstones, and fresh water pearls.

She strives to provide beautiful designs created with integrity and quality, while providing great service to all individuals who want to stand out from mass produced accessories. (you go Ali! We couldn't agree more!)

Ali is Korean American, and is fluent in Spanish. She loves People who have "smile lines" on their faces, her Nikon camera, designing jewelry (of course), and finding AAA gemstones!

She dislikes mass produced costume jewelry.

Next in line, Amy Neiwirth from Columbus, OH:

Sweet Stella Designs is the brainchild of artist and educator Amy Neiwirth. Amy's Tiny Treats are hand-sculpted from polymer clay. Each piece is hand painted and unique. Also check out her map jewelry she made custom for our area!

And last but certainly not least, meet Louisville native Jules Barnett, now residing in Madison, Alabama. Her beautifully upcycled ties and vintage gems make such an incredible addition to our shop. Happy to have ya, Jules!

"Being a wife and mother of a toddler, I know the hardships of trying to be stylish while still dressed in "machine washable" clothes that can withstand the playground, while remianing dressed up enough for lunch with friends. So, I have created this line of jewelry to not only dress up a white t-shirt and jeans, but to also go with your favorite black dress for a night out on the town. We built a majority of our shop space from salvaged materials and found objects...and many of our artists love making old things new again. Jill's beautiful jewelry made from salvaged aluminum cans simply adds to our overall earth-friendly aesthetic.

Did you know recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a 100-watt bulb for 20 hours, a computer for 3 or a tv for 2? (EPA, 2008)

We are honored to welcome Alice Rebecca Potter, from London!

Alice is an illustrator and designer based in London. Her work explores the natural world, in which she has a particular passion for British wildlife and birds. In 2008, Alice graduated with a degree in Textile Design, and now works as a freelancer for The Swatch Loft, supplying designs for fashion. She also runs an online shop, and is always working on developing her portfolio. Currently, Alice is looking into developing her skills for Children's Book Illustration, which has interested her for a long time.

Dandy Lion boutique blooms under former IUS students

Ani Tucker, former IUS student and co-owner of The Dandy Lion boutique, works on designing a custom prom dress. She owns the store along with her twin sister, Ali Tucker.

Every college student puts a lot of thought into what they will major in and how they will use that degree later in life. For former IUS students and identical twin sisters, Ani and Ali Tucker, the majors they pursued have helped them create The Dandy Lion.

The Dandy Lion is their own, local boutique that incorporates all their interests, ranging from fashion design and art to philosophy.

Located in downtown New Albany, the boutique features vintage and handmade items, as well as acting as a platform for the twins’ beliefs and interests.

“We support independent small business, art, design, music and community — promoting all positive causes for the earth and humanity,” Ani said. “We strive in the anti-mass-production movement and strive to tread lightly.”

Ali graduated from IU Southeast last May with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy. Ani originally pursued journalism at IU Southeast but ultimately decided to attend art school in both Savannah, Ga., and New York City, where she majored in fashion design.

Returning home, however, was always in the back of her mind.

“My fellow classmates, who were all determined to move to New York and pursue their design careers, would warn me not to move home for fear that I would sit on my degree and not do anything with it,” Ani said. “I like to think I just chose the road less traveled.”

Their creation opened recently in August 2010 — the day before their 26th birthday — and it continues to grow.

With the help of social networking websites like Facebook and their own blog — http://thedandylionshop.blogspot.com — the sisters have been able to reach out to many people, customers and artists alike.

“We currently have over 120 artists and crafters at the shop — local, in the U.S., Australia, Europe and Canada,” Ani said.

The sisters also have an account on Etsy.com, an online store that allows them to sell products online. These can be found under the username TheDandyLionShop.

Both these products and the products in store were described by Ani as vintage-inspired and classic with the right mix of trendy.

“We are very picky about what we include in the store,” Ani said.

She said the store is about 40 percent vintage and 60 percent handmade.

“Our storefront works as a showcase for independent artists of all types and for selective vintage pieces,” Ani said.

The store acts as a showcase for the twins’ artistic talents, as well.

The entire shop was up-cycled out of found objects and recycled barn wood.

“I pride myself in the fact that half of our shelves were built from palettes we pulled from alleys on Bardstown Road,” Ani said. “A family friend even let us scavenge their old barn for rusty tin, old saw blades and wagon wheels, which I have since painted and incorporated visually in the shop.”

Ani makes clothes and accessories for the shop, as well as custom orders. She is currently designing custom prom dresses for two Floyd Central High School seniors.

Ali said she also uses her degree in philosophy to help promote the store’s social, political and economical causes.

Perfect for the love in your life!

Brooke is an illustrator who brings whimsical, nature-based scenes to life. Her complex pieces combine animals with instruments, ribbons with clouds and always feature her iconic subtle color palate and playful aesthetic.

Brooke finds her inspiration from various natural landscapes as well as Greek and Native American culture. She started drawing when she was a young thing, but started focusing on it in high school and later in college. After receiving her BFA in painting from the University of Oregon in 2003, Brooke flew her native Northwest for the big city, where she focused on her other passion - professional baking. She received a degree in Professional Pastry Baking at the French Culinary Institute of New York in 2005 and worked as a high-end cake decorator immediately.

Craving more trees and more drawing space, Brooke packed up her apartment and re-rooted herself in Portland in 2009. She's been cranking out pieces ever since and has had shows locally at Mississippi Studios, the Farm, and Tribute Gallery. She's pleased as punch to be on her bike, thinking of pictures and what kind of cake to make for her next friend's birthday.

If this center is constructed, it will be the first community & commercial landfill gas development partnership in the US!

This renewable energy source, along with other alternative energies, will initially be used to power clay, glass, and metal studios and eventually will grow to include a gallery, a greenhouse, and an education center.

OVCE has partnered with the Clark County Commissioners and Hoosier Energy to develop the first community & commercial landfill gas development partnership in the US at the Clark-Floyd Landfill. Hoosier Energy´s 2 MW electricity generation project provides “green’ energy for over 1200 Southern Indiana homes.

Their Vision is to transform the local ecology of the landfill through an eco-vention, or an artist initiated project that will involve the entire community in turning a landfill into a resource for our community. In doing this, they hope to inspire each visitor to consider and recognize their individual ability to have a positive impact on the earth, in our community, and the health and well being of all.

NEW ALBANY — New Albany is evolving. Public art has become more prevalent in the downtown, drawing more locals and outside visitors to our community; bringing more publicity. The river front is alive with music and other events. Dilapidated buildings have been refurbished through private investors and nonprofit sector assistance. On Sundays it is now sometimes difficult to find a parking space in front of your favorite restaurant. Used to be a person could count the number of people working down here on two hands, and those that lived down here on one. You didn’t always need all your fingers.

Today we see a new and different community. New Albany is evolving. During the recent holiday season, a grass roots movement started. It is simple in its concept and certainly critical to the survival of the local business community.

New Albany First is this community’s answer to the growing competition as cities across the metro-area and state refine their efforts to keep the local dollar within the confines of their communities. NAFirst is this town’s first organized, organically grown “Buy Local/Buy Independent” program. It grew out of a $300 investment that produced 5,000 fliers that were distributed to 40-plus locally owned businesses during the last holiday season. That flier described the impact a single dollar spent with a New Albany business has in terms of creating jobs and leveraging other dollars spent locally. Three months later, those flyers are still sending out their message.

The response to that initial offering has proved that there is an interest and the desire to see this type of program in New Albany on a larger scale. This is a town of entrepreneurs. It is a hidden industry in this town. Entrepreneurs need to be supported. This program does that. The local entrepreneur industry without question brings in people from across the metro area and probably from outside that area as well. The more we become known for these locally grown businesses, the more successful New Albany will be, and the more outside dollars will come into, and stay, in New Albany.

Because of the response to that flier, a group of citizens came together, developed a plan and consequently have created a budding new nonprofit organization that, if funded, will cover the City of New Albany, and spread the word about the importance of buying locally first. For the first time that I am aware of, New Albany actually has a volunteer-based organization that has been built from the ground up, not the top down. That alone ensures success.

The energy is there, the planning has been done, the volunteer board is in place and it already has a potential membership base waiting to pay dues, once they know it has a chance to succeed.

The first thing someone is going to say is, don’t we have enough nonprofits in this town? The second question will be: Shouldn’t this organization or that one already be doing this? To the first question I’d respond that a viable community can always support a growing nonprofit sector. In fact, such growth is a key sign to the outside of a fit and vital community. A successful community is one that learns to work with and lean on its nonprofit community; especially in tough economic times. A business looking to relocate into New Albany will take such growth into consideration when it comes to making a location decision.

To the second question, I respond, “All things evolve.” Right now, just as the downtown has evolved from empty and vacant spaces to a vibrant and growing district, the nonprofit community is doing the same. Organizations that can’t are being replaced by ones that can. Those organizations need to be supported. Sometimes we need to forget the old ties that bind and recognize that things do change. We need to support those new things, while finding ways to keep the energy of the old and transferring it to the new. While that can be painful, sometimes what is painful is necessary.

New Albany First will be a communitywide organization. It will be THE Buy Independent, Buy Local program for New Albany.

When the time soon comes, both local independent and corporately owned businesses in this town should give serious consideration to how they can support the goals and mission of this new important organization.

Making downtown dandy: The Dandy Lion brings local attitude to arts, crafts and jewelry

NEW ALBANY — The Dandy Lion could be mistaken for a Bardstown Road or Frankfort Avenue boutique, as inside the shop the shelves and racks are lined with handcrafted jewelry, locally designed clothes and somewhat obscure trinkets.

But 26-year-old twin sisters Ani and Ali Tucker desired to bring their business to their native city, so instead of Louisville, The Dandy Lion launched in August at 310 Bank St. in downtown New Albany.

“This has always been my dream — to come here while downtown was developing,” Ani Tucker said during a ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the early success of the business this week.

“We couldn’t be happier — we want to be here forever.”

Infinitely in terms of downtown, as Ali Tucker said they hope to be so successful they’ll one day need to expand or find a larger building.

The Dandy Lion focuses on local artists and products, which Ali Tucker said sets the business apart from other specialty shops in Southern Indiana as well as Louisville.

“Our mission is anti-mass production,” she said. “We’re all about small, independent designers.”

The Tuckers were born and raised in New Albany. Ali received a Bachelors degree of Art in Philosophy from Indiana University Southeast, and Ani graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia with a Bachelors degree of Fine Art in Fashion Design.

She was featured on the TLC reality television show “Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta,” and was co-owner of a similar boutique in Athens, Ga., before moving back to New Albany to open The Dandy Lion.

The sisters incorporate their varying passions into their work, which is also featured at The Dandy Lion. Ali Tucker molds jewelry and fine art, while Ani designs clothes, hats, bags and shoes.

Their interest and creativity forms the store, as Ani Tucker said The Dandy Lion is pretty much forged with upcycled, found objects.

The name The Dandy Lion was derived from the sisters’ admiration of the vintage word dandy, and the fact their Zodiac sign is Leo, which in Latin means lion.

The shop brings diversity to downtown which is what the city needs, Realtor and Develop New Albany member Mike Kopp said.

“We continue to have an interest down here, and a push toward more retail,” he said.

Kopp helped the Tuckers find the spot for The Dandy Lion, and the owners said business has been good so far.

“We just saw the potential that was already here,” Ani Tucker said.

They see their role in the community as being more than just retailers because The Dandy Lion has sponsored events and concerts. The business has organized a Valentine’s dance Feb. 12, themed Lincoln in Love in honor of the late president’s birthday.

The event is a cooperative effort at Dave Thrasher’s Art Store.

A boutique like The Dandy Lion compliments downtown restaurants by providing customers options so they can shop and eat in the same area, Mayor Doug England said.

He credited the sisters for investing in their home city.

“It’s been our local people — our local people making downtown work,” England said.

The Dandy Lion is open Tuesday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The store’s phone number is 812-944-9477.

Meet a Maker- Melody Dennison

How did you become so Dandy? Were you born that way?

I was born stubborn. My first word was "no", not "mommy" or "daddy". I had to be restrained every time I went to the doctor as a child, and no one could brush my hair without a battle. That hard headed fire in me paid off as an adult because I have always fought and worked hard to do what makes me happy in life.....not what was expected. Luckily I had an amazing mother that supported my decisions, no matter how out there. Thankfully I got over throwing tantrums and am much nicer now.

What drove you to start pursuing art?

I was always drawing and doodling growing up. Art was always the only subject in school I looked forward to. In high school I was in an Art Club that met after school, and outside of school I was exposed to graffiti and was amazed by it.

How do you pick your medium/materials? What are your favorite materials to work with?

I mostly work with spray paint, but I have also been working with acrylic and watercolor more. There are things you can do with spray paint that you just can't replicate with other mediums, and it will always be my first love. I'd like to play with oils though. I like a lot of variety. It's good to push yourself out of the norm.

What pieces do you have in mind for the future?

When I'm not doing stencil and pop art, I really like doing cartoonish style lowbrow stuff. This year I plan on doing more of that.....weird creatures and silly stuff.

Thoughts on world domination? Anti-mass production? The handmade movement?

I love that more and more people are putting their handmade creations out there...crafts, knitting, paintings, cartoons..all of it. It's not easy letting people judge your work that you put your heart into, but we need it. People need to be reminded that as adults you can still do all the things you love to do. The daily grind of work can eat at your soul. Creative outlets help relieve that monotony and help you keep your inner child. As far as mass produced art goes...it has no soul. You could splatter some paint and a gallery would sell it for thousands of dollars if you have the right people backing you. The art world is pretentious. You have to hold onto your values, stay true to yourself and be humble. Beware of gallery owners that only see dollar signs. With my stencils I sketch and trace them and cut them all by hand. Even though it would be easier to use a printer, I like doing it the hard way. It wouldn't be as rewarding if I just mass produced paintings without putting everything I could into it. That would take all the fun out of it for me, personally. I make art because it makes me happy and because it's what I love. Knowing that people like anything I make enough to put it in their home just inspires me to keep doing it. I still get excited every time I sell a piece. That support means so much.

Ring Display Box Tutorial

This project is wonderful for displaying rings at boutiques, trunk shows, art fairs, or home. I stayed basic with the colors I used, so that the rings displayed would be the focal point. You can customize this as much or as little as you want. I found my wood tray at Ben Franklins, a local craft store. You could go digging around your house, treasure hunting at an antique store, etc. As long as the style and size fit your intended purpose.

Project: Ring Display Box

Time: 20 - 30 minutes

Skill Level: Super simple, though some parts take patience.

Please ask for assistance cutting the rods if you decide to use an electric saw.

What You'll Need:

Box

Dow Rods (I used 1" thick)

Fabric - stiffer or thicker fabrics w/little or no stretch

( I over bought, to make room for errors. Leave room for tucking the fabric into the sides and grooves)

Saw or Jigsaw

Iron

Fabric Scissors

Stuffing

Optional:

I found a thin butter knife helped when tucking the fabric.

I also opted for a staple gun, because I found it easier to wrap each rod individually. You can staple the fabric in place on the ends and middle. This is easily hidden.

Step 1: Measure your box and mark the cut line for each dow rod. Cutting them too short will leave too much wiggle room and make it hard to space the rods evenly.

Step 2: Carefully cut each rod. I will go ahead and throw a disclaimer in here... I tend to be inpatient. Please use the correct work table or area to cut your rods. Also small bits of saw dust may fly around, so using glasses or safety goggles is best. Always ask for help, pride regenerates... Fingers... Not so much.

Step 3: Snug each dow rod into your box. Space them between 1/4 and 1/2 inch apart as pictured below. This will allow you to tell if you've cut enough pieces for your project.

Step 4: Lightly cover and stretch stuffing over your rods.

Step 5: This is the most tedious part of this project, tucking in the fabric. I found it easiest to cover each rod one by one by wrapping the fabric 1/2 way around the rod and stapling the middle and ends. A thin butter knife really helped to neatly tuck the fabric.

Step 6: Enjoy! You should be able to gently tuck the ring base of each ring in between the rods. The stuffing will help cushion and protect each ring.

Optional: You can always stain or paint your box before hand. Trying different finishes or antiquing processes could add a unique look. Allow your stain or paint to dry for 24 hrs to avoid ruining your fabric.

Hey all. Just wanted to post real quick to mention the disasters in Australia and remind everyone to keep that positive karma flowing in honor of them. There has been flooding in states nearby Brisbane since late November, but it just recently turned violent- 16 lost their lives, over 40 went missing-some sources saying 90! Hundreds have been rescued via helicopter.

With the snow causing difficulties in the US we all understand how natural weather conditions can cause severe stress-keep the citizens of Brisbane in your thoughts and contribute in whatever way you can!

"Lewis Black might be good for your college-age brother, but your hip niece who reminds you of "Juno" would prefer something hand-made from The Dandy Lion (310 Bank St., New Albany). Co-owner Katy Traughber goes straight to a collection of prints ($16) by artist Matt Cipov. "I think these are amazing," Traughber said. "I love 'em because I feel like they're really playful. I can see a guy or girl hanging these. I haven't seen anything like this in this area yet. I kinda like the creepiness about it, too." Both boys and girls have those times when they could use a drink, but aren't supposed to. For those times, Traughber recommends any one of their various flasks, and agrees with my manly selection of one in particular. "I like the skull flask ($22)," she said. "It's also got a little bit of art deco."

Hello Everyone! We are pleased to invite you to our OPEN HOUSE this Saturday November 27th, which has been named National Small Business Saturday!
In conjunction with this year's Holiday Fest in our historic downtown, we are inviting everyone to stop in! We will be featuring Wildtree all natural foods (no preservatives, additives, MSG's, or dyes!) as well as locally owned and operated HobKnobb coffee!!! The lovely lion Mrs. Katy Traughber will also provide homemade all-natural cupcakes!
The open house will be from 12-5, or until the food and coffee runs out! Come by and support local business, and meet a Wildtree representative, Sandy Sanders, who will teach you how to eat healthy!

Again, New Albany's 2010 Holiday Fest will be held the same day, this saturday November 27th from Noon - 6:00pm. The event will take place on the Main Source Bank Stage on the corner of State and Market Street.
